Nord C1 Combo Organ

Nord C1 Combo Organ

Some distinct organ sounds have remained popular throughout the decades of pop and rock & roll music - soulful sounds that breathe and growl as found only in heavy, bulky vintage instruments. Apart from difficulties in sourcing, restoring, and maintaining these vintage organs, their sheer size and weight make them anything but ideal for the gigging musician - especially…

Nord C1

The NORD C1 is the answer to every organist's dreams: ie. a duel manual, self contained instrument, with a dedicated bass pedal input, that can be carried up and down the stairs under one arm!
When I first purchased the instrument, it felt and sounded impressive enough.
However, within a few days of owning it, Clavia posted an updated operating system on their website (OS1.04) which substantially and noticeably improved aspects of the rotary speaker simulation (warmer sound), the keyboard action (it made the keys a little “hotter”), and the overdrive (more responsive to the sweep of the swell pedal).
This is one major advantage of buying a Nord instrument : the fact that it is work in progress, and when they improve any aspect of it, you’ll have access to that free of charge.
The sound of the tonewheel drawbars can be varied by choosing 1 of 3 drawbar models: one clean and two vintage (not to be confused with the 3 different organ models). Utilizing these with the onboard EQ and overdrive means you can replicate just about any Hammond sound you’ve heard on any record!
The reverb and delay both sound superb, and give a wide scope for differing levels of effect.
The layout of the instrument has been exceptionally well thought out and geared towards being able to tweak many aspects of the sound during a live performance. This is especially useful if you're playing left hand bass, and only have one free hand some of the time to tweak with!
Speaking of left hand bass, I have noticed, after several gigs, that the bass sound from the lower drawbars is an extremely punchy and well defined sound, and is superior to my last instrument (a digital Korg BX-3).
Another thoughtful addition by Nord is the fact that they've labeled the back panel inserts on the top of the instrument, thus saving the need to go round the back and bend down to make connections. Small point I know, but those of us who gig a lot appreciate things like this!

All in all I can honestly say the C1 is the best purchase I've made for a long time.

Mike Gorman.
